STOP THE SPREADING OF MICROPLASTICS
At Mini Rodini we only use recycled polyester. By using recycled polyester we avoid the use of virgin petroleum as a raw material.
Recycled polyester is a wonderful material – if cared for properly. It requires much less water in production than cotton, and no toxic chemicals are used. However, when you wash fleece, or any garment made from synthetic fibers for that matter, tiny microplastic fibers are released and might be transferred into nature.
Although it might not solve the entire problem with the spreading of microplastics, the Guppyfriend washing bag is a simple solution that you can use when washing your garments made from synthetic fibers. It protects the garment during washing and reduces the amount of microplastics that are released from the fabric. It captures and holds most of the microplastics that would otherwise be released, which you can then throw in the trash instead of having them end up in our water. Besides this we also recommend the following care instructions:
- Avoid washing your fleece garments! Most stains can come off by just wiping it off with a wet cloth.
- Iron the garment - ironing keeps the fibers flat which reduces the release of microplastic fibres (remember to read the care label instructions)
- Clean your washing machine filter regularly
- Hang dry instead of tumble dry
WHAT ARE MICROPLASTICS?
Microplastics is a collective name for small plastic particles, they can be up to five millimeters big. Microplastic fibers are plastic fibers that shed off synthetic textiles, like polyester. They are essentially microscopic pieces of plastic.
WHY DO WE NEED TO STOP THE SPREADING OF MICROPLASTICS?
When these synthetic fabrics are being washed the microplastic fibers are flushed down the drain and much of it ends up in the oceans where it can remain for hundreds of years. Swallowed by fish and other sea life, microplastic travels up the food chain, where they eventually end up on our plates. Microplastics are also known to harm the fertility, growth and survival of marine life.
