We are welcoming the holiday season by introducing our Conscious Christmas campaign! Discover gifts that are kinder to our planet and learn more about some of the fabrics we consider to be sustainably better.
GOTS-CERTIFIED ORGANIC COTTON
We are proud to say that the cotton we use in our products is 100 % organic cotton, and the overall majority is GOTS-certified. So what does this mean?
It’s not enough to say that a product is made from “organic” or “recycled” fabric. That speaks only to the actual fibre a fabric is made of, but it says nothing about the rest of the production. That’s why certifications are so important. They guarantee that the whole production process is sustainable, from seed or raw material to finished product.
The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) is the strictest certification for organic materials on the market today. It involves rigid controls of chemical use and fair working conditions, to name a few, throughout the entire manufacturing process. That includes the processing, manufacturing, packaging, trading and distribution of all textiles.
If you’re looking for garments made in organic cotton - look for this certification. Don’t forget that when you buy garments made in GOTS-certified organic cotton you’re investing in water conservation, better soil, cleaner air and farmers living standards. Therefore the price is sometimes, but not always, higher. However, with demand on the rise more choices will become available.Read more about organic cotton here
The holidays are all about giving. Not just to your loved ones, but to others as well. Here you can shop from our three lates charity collections - Save the Galgo, 4 Elephants and Sea Shepherd.
SAVE THE GALGO
50 000 - 100 000 Galgos get thrown out on the street each year. They’re tortured, abandoned, thrown into wells... Save the Galgo is a collection made to help spread awareness about the hundred thousands of forgotten Spanish Galgos. 20 % of the price of each item sold is donated to Galgos del Sol, a non-profit dog shelter in Spain.
4 Elephants is our Autumn/Winter 2019 capsule collection created to protect the elephants in one of Africa’s most critical ecosystems. Poaching and illegal trade in ivory is the single largest threat to elephants today, killing on average one elephant every half hour. 20 % of the price of each item sold from the collection is donated to Wildhood Foundation to support the Akashinga project - employing women as wildlife warriors.
Sea Shepherd is our co-lab from Autumn/Winter 2018. The collection is for vegan pirates and mini activists, or kids that just love the ocean and wildlife and want to protect it for the future. It consisted of garments made in GOTS-certified organic cotton and recycled polyester made from ocean plastic waste. The collection was very popular and sold out quickly, but we still have tattoos left that you can add to your order to support this cause! Mini Rodini donates 20 % of the price of each tattoo sold to Sea Shepherd, to support their mission to defend, conserve and protect our oceans.
Recycled polyester is a versatile material that can be used for many different product types. Our windbreakers, bomber jackets, backpacks, fleece, tracksuits and swim shorts (to name a few) are all made from recycled polyester.
ENVIRONMENTAL BENEFITS OF RECYCLED POLYESTER:
- Reduces the dependency of virgin petroleum as a raw material.
- Prevents used plastic from ending up in our oceans and harming marine life.
- Decreases greenhouse gas emissions that come from creating and processing conventional polyester.
- Can be continuously recycled again and again without quality degradation.
WHAT IS GRS-CERTIFICATION?
GRS stands for Global Recycling Standard. GRS traces the product from raw material to finished product, and includes the criteria on banning hazardous chemicals. The certification ensures the garment consists of recycled materials made from PET soda bottles, discarded fishnets, and used clothes, to name a few. It’s the strictest standard for recycled materials on the market.
We use Tencel™ Lyocell in our basic series and try to incorporate this fabulous fabric in our collections as much as possible. It is incredibly soft to the touch, durable and biodegradable.
Lyocell is a pioneer in the sustainable textiles industry, known as a more sustainable version of viscose. It’s also a great substitute for organic cotton which is a fibre we use a lot in our collections. One of the keys to sustainable production and consumption is to be diverse in your choice of fabrics, it hurts the ecosystem if we use too much of one crop. That’s why we are always on a hunt for new sustainable fabrics - Tencel™ Lyocell is an example of this.
What is Tencel™ Lyocell?
Lyocell is derived from forested wood (mainly eucalyptus trees), and an overall majority of our Lyocell is sourced from sustainable forestry (FSC-certified - which guarantees responsible felling and replanting of the trees). Most of our Lyocell is made by the Austrian producer Lenzing and is called Tencel™ Lyocell. They have state of the art machinery that holds the highest environmental standards.
Why is it sustainable?
The production is made in a closed loop process, meaning 99% of all chemicals and water is recycled instead of being released into the environment. The fibers are certified as compostable and biodegradable, and can therefore fully revert back to nature. There’s also a lot less water and land needed in production compared to the production of cotton, for example. The result is a beautiful material that’s soft, breathable, and durable.
