Organic Wool

WHY ORGANIC WOOL?
Organic wool is a fantastic fibre for many reasons. It has temperature regulating properties, it breathes well and will keep you warm. Organic wool products have long lifespans, meaning they can be used longer than other textile fibre products. It’s washed less frequently, saving both water and energy. But let's not forget about some of wool’s greatest properties - it’s recyclable and biodegradable.

WOOL DOES NOT CONTRIBUTE TO THE SPREADING OF MICROPLASTICS
All textiles shed microfibres when they’re worn and washed. Synthetic fibres, like polyester and nylon, shed microplastic fibres that will stay in our environment forever. Wool garments, on the other hand, also shed microfibers, but these fibres are biodegradable and therefore do not contribute to the spreading of microplastics.

ORGANIC WOOL VS CONVENTIONAL WOOL
Wool is a natural fibre with built-in characteristics that makes it renewable and biodegradable. Organic wool relates to how the material has been farmed. This is wool that has been farmed without involving many commonly used chemicals, such as veterinary medicines like preventative treatments against lice, flies and internal parasites. All in all, when you choose organic wool you’re supporting more sustainable farming practices and better animal welfare. Better animal welfare means that an animal is healthy, comfortable, well nourished, safe, is not suffering from pain, fear or distress, and is able to express behaviours that are important for its physical and mental state. Better animal welfare also includes disease prevention and appropriate veterinary care. Organic farmers take a preventative approach to disease, so animals are not routinely treated with antibiotics, wormers or pesticides. In total, there’s enough wool produced on this earth to make one sweater per year per person. However, only about 1 % of the world’s sheep and wool supply are organically managed.

GOTS-CERTIFIED
When you buy a product labelled as organic wool, the rest of the production chain might still be conventional. That’s why all organic wool garments from Mini Rodini are certified from sheep to finished product by GOTS - Global Organic Textile Standard. The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) is the strictest certification for organic materials on the market today. It involves rigid controls of chemical use and fair working conditions, to name a few, throughout the entire manufacturing process. That includes the processing, manufacturing, packaging, trading and distribution of all textiles. Remember to always look for this certification when buying organic products.

WOOL PROPERTIES AND CARE INSTRUCTIONS
Taking care of wool garments is very straightforward. Here’s a list of wool’s natural properties that makes it durable and easy to care for:

  • Stain resistance: Wool has a natural protective layer that keeps stains from being absorbed.
  • Resilience and elasticity: Wool fibres are tear resistant, flexible and naturally elastic. This means that your wool garments comfortably stretch when you wear them, but returns to its original shape when taken off.
  • Odour resistance: Wool absorbs and releases sweat a lot better than other textiles.
  • Easy care: Because of its natural stain and odour resistant properties wool does not need to be washed very frequently. Unlike any other textile fibre, wool can be refreshed simply by hanging it in fresh air, saving water and energy.
